Deflicker AI Videos: Removing Flicker from Generative AI Videos

Fixing Generative AI Video Flicker with Flicker Free from Digital Anarchy

Generative AI videos often have problems with flicker. So there’s a need to deflicker the videos when this occurs. The cause of the flicker is either because 1) GenAI generates each frame as a separate image and there are inconsistencies between sequential images or 2) artifacts, where the AI glitches out and produces random weirdness.

Luckily Flicker Free can fix a lot of these issues, especially the inconsistencies between frames. Deflickering the video and giving you usable footage.

Let’s take a look at a couple videos:

The first shows an example of artifacts. You can see a flashes on the dragon tail. While the Ai might have put those there intentionally, i.e. a neon dragon with a flickering tail, there are reasons to think they’re artifacts. 1) I didn’t prompt it to add any sort of flickering or flashing. 2) The flashes aren’t repetitive as they would be with a neon sign that was flickering. The same neon tubes would be flashing in a real sign. 3) They look like what flashing artifacts look like.

So highly likely to be errors/artifacts in my opinion.

The second example shows the problem of AI rendering each frame as a completely separate frame instead one frame in a sequence of frames. The light beams subtle shift frame to frame creating an unnatural flicker of the light. It’s less obvious than the dragon tail, but it’s noticeable and distracting.

(You might need to view the video in full screen mode to see the flicker)

The same Flicker Free settings work for both pieces of footage, so let’s go over those settings.

Start off with the Rolling Bands preset. This is always a great place to start. It actually works for a lot of footage without any changes. However in this case it does not.

Flicker Free Rolling Bands Settings

Since the camera is in motion we need to tell Flicker Free how to deal with it. There are two settings that do that. Detect Motion (which is on by default) is faster but can only handle ‘easy’ motion. Motion Compensation is the better algorithm but it’s slower. So try it with Detect Motion first, if it doesn’t work, turn it off and turn on Motion Compensation. (There are situations where you want both on, but usually one or the other is fine).

In this case Detect Motion doesn’t work, so turn it off and turn on Motion Compensation.

With Motion Compensation turned on, both clips get fixed. The dragon is completely deflickered and the corridor is about 90% fixed. If you squint you can see a little bit of color shifting but it’s not noticeable unless you’re really looking for it.

So as you can see, Flicker Free can really help deflicker Generative AI videos that have flicker problems. As with all flicker, it doesn’t fix 100% of the clips but it does fix or improve most of the AI clips we’ve applied it to. Regardless of whether you’re using Sora, Nano Banana, Veo, Firefly, RunwayML or whatever the video model du jour is, Flicker Free is a key tool for fixing flicker in AI generated videos.
