Generative Extend Is A Bit Weird with People
When Generative Extend first showed up in Premiere Pro it had a real problem with flicker (it seems to be better now). AI video often has flicker problems and I just wrote a blog post about that. But in researching that post I generative extended a few clips including one of our demo clips of singer extraordinaire Angela Laflamme. And woah, just in time for Halloween got some pretty wild results (sorry Angela):
Extending Generative Extend with Ugly Box
Generative Extend in Premiere actually works reasonably well, but for humans it can really go off the rails. Especially the eyes. Before GenExtend if you needed to extend a clip for a transition or something, often you’d just reverse the last couple seconds of the clip. GenExtend, _sort_ of does that but uses Generative AI. This usually looks a bit more natural than just reversing the video, but sometimes… it looks really weird. As is the case for my long suffering friend Angela.
So I thought this would make a great Halloween clip to use for Ugly Box! Ugly Box is our free plugin for making people, well… ugly. And it’s great for Halloween videos!
Since Gen Extend gave me an excellent (and horrific) starting point, I can just apply Ugly Box, click Make Ugly and there you go. I decreased the Ugly saturation a bit as well. It’s an easy AND ugly plugin. You can do this with Beauty Box too! In Beauty Box you can animate the effect on and off, which you can’t do the with free Ugly Box.
Here are the settings for both plugins:
And the final video which has the effect animate on. We used Beauty Box to do that but if you want to do it with Ugly Box, you can transition between the normal clip and a version with Ugly Box on it.
